LA CANADA – Week in and week out, the Rio Hondo League continues to prove itself to be one of the area’s premier showcases of girls basketball. On Wednesday, La Canada High School put itself right back in the thick of the race for the league title. The Spartans (13-4) easily defeated visiting rival San Marino 63-29 to raise their league record to 2-1. La Canada senior guard Mary Kate Hurlbutt led the way for the Spartans with a game-high 15 points after connecting on five 3-point shots. A lot of teams run zone on us, so that leaves shooters open.” Hurlbutt’s hot shooting became infectious as five other Spartans knocked down 3-pointers of their own. “Everything becomes so much easier when the ball goes through the hoop,” La Canada coach Tamar Hill said. “Everyone relaxes. It just kind of breeds confidence.” The Spartans raced to an early 18-4 lead and never looked back. Senior forward Emmilee Ringelberg, along with Hurlbutt, scored six early points to give the Spartans their dominating first-half margin. Ringelberg finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. The victory gives the Spartans consecutive league wins and eliminates the aftertaste of a bitter loss to rival Monrovia that began league play last week. Hill and the Spartans are looking for more. “Two wins in a row is fantastic, but we’ve got to win seven more,” Hill said. “Our goal is the (Rio Hondo) league championship.” San Marino falls to 13-5 on the season and 0-3 in league. Junior Kim Pan kept the Titans competitive in the first half with a team-high nine points. Sophomore Nicole Chan contributed eight points. La Canada junior Emily Ballard had a strong all-around game for the Spartans with nine points, nine rebounds and four assists. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
