How Sampdoria duo Dennis Praet and Joachim Andersen can solve two of Unai Emery’s biggest issues at Arsenal

first_imgJoachim Andersen’s ball-playing abilities were integral to Sampdoria’s build-up play last season (Picture: Getty)Emery’s insistence that Arsenal build attacking moves from their own defensive third was in evidence from the very start of his reign and possessing defenders with the capability to play both short and long accurately is key to his strategy. In terms of actual defending, Andersen relishes one-on-one duels, although he does have a tendency to get too tight to opposition forwards resulting in fouls given against him, similarly to Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopolous. Last season, he was booked seven times in the league. For a defender with a 6’4 frame, Andersen is also not as dominant in the air as you might expect either, as he won 75/139 (53%) of his aerial duels last season. In contrast, the much-maligned Shkodran Mustafi, who incidentally made his name at Sampdoria, won 123/185 (66%) in the Premier League.AdvertisementAdvertisementAlthough Andersen could tighten up certain aspects of his game, he reads the game well, has an excellent passing range and possesses good physical attributes for a Premier League central defender. At 23, he should only improve playing in a better team with regular exposure to a higher quality league.Deep-lying playmakerArsenal fans yearning for an out-and-replacement for Aaron Ramsey as a box-to-box goalscoring midfielder might be disappointed to find out that Praet has scored only four goals in 106 appearances for Sampdoria since his move from Anderlecht in 2016.When Praet was breaking through at Anderlecht, he along with Youri Tielemans – three years his junior – was regarded as one of the club’s best young prospects having caught the eye for the youth team in an attacking midfield role.A return of 27 goals in 182 games (roughly one goal every six games) for Anderlecht, compared to only four in 106 games (one goal every 26.5 games) for Sampdoria, shows not only that Praet has been playing at a higher level in Italy but also that his role has changed. Unai Emery is on the lookout for reinforcements at Arsenal this summer (Picture: PA)An issue that Emery will encounter, though, is identifying targets who fall into Arsenal’s reduced budget this summer in what is generally an over-inflated market. According to reports, two players considered both good enough and affordable enough for Arsenal are Sampdoria duo Joachim Andersen and Dennis Praet.AdvertisementAdvertisementADVERTISEMENTArsenal are reported to have submitted an improved £44m joint bid for the players and Serie A club’s president Massimo Ferrero is ready to accept it having knocked back a £37m offer from the Gunners last week.Andersen, a 23-year-old central defender and Praet, a 25-year-old central midfielder, would theoretically fill two problem positions for Arsenal considering their defensive vulnerability in recent seasons and the loss of Aaron Ramsey to Juventus. Here is what they could offer Arsenal should the deal be completed.Ball-playing defenderArsenal are not the only side in north London to have been keeping tabs on Andersen, as Spurs have regularly been linked with a move for him since the turn of the year amid speculation over Toby Alderweireld’s future. Those links make sense considering Andersen’s biggest asset is his long-range passing ability from the back, with the Denmark international’s raking diagonal passes out to the flanks from both feet very much a feature of Sampdoria’s build-up play last season.Andersen’s ability to distribute the ball effectively over distance is highlighted by the fact that Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic was the only outfield player to complete more accurate long passes (229) than the Sampdoria defender (188) in Serie A last season, according to Whoscored.Considering his tendency to launch long balls forward, Andersen’s overall pass accuracy rate of 88.8% is impressive. That percentage was the highest in Sampdoria’s squad last season for any player with more than five appearances. Advertisement Dennis Praet has adapted his game since moving from Belgium to Italy in 2016 (Picture: Getty)Praet’s manager in each of his three seasons in Italy, AC Milan’s rumoured next appointment Marco Giampaolo, has utilised the Belgian in a deep-lying playmaker role on the right side of his default 4-3-1-2 system, therefore restricting his freedom to break forward.Although his underlying statistics of two goals and three assists in 34 Serie A appearances last season do not particularly jump out, Praet did rank top for chances created (39) and dribbles completed (37) in Sampdoria’s squad, highlighting both his playmaking abilities and good close control.AdvertisementA neat and tidy midfield player, it isn’t hard to see why Praet earned a trial at Arsenal during the Wenger era nearly a decade ago while his fruitful partnership alongside Lucas Torreira in Sampdoria’s engine room for two consecutive campaigns is perhaps a factor behind their renewed interest under Emery.More: Arsenal FCArsenal flop Denis Suarez delivers verdict on Thomas Partey and Lucas Torreira movesThomas Partey debut? Yobo doesn’t need coaching experience to be on Eagles bench — Bosso

first_imgRelatedPosts Rohr lists Musa, Ekong, 23 others for Cote d’Ivoire, Tunisia friendlies Super Eagles soar on FIFA ranking FIFA ranking: Nigeria moves up by two spots, now world 29th Ladan Bosso, President of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association, says former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, does not need coaching experience to succeed as Super Eagles Assistant coach. Bosso made the assertion against the backdrop of raging criticism trailing the Nigeria Football Federation’s recent appointment of Yobo as replacement for Imama Amapakabo, an assistant coach of the Super Eagles. Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja, Bosso maintained that Yobo’s experience as a player and knowledge of the game would come even as he learns on the job. He said: “Most of the Super Eagles players basically are based in Europe. “He is used to those places. “The Super Eagles players on ground will also give him respect because he’s an ex-international and has captained the team.” Bosso said three basic criteria were required before appointing a national team coach: playing experience, certification and work experience, adding that Yobo ticks the first two boxes. According to him, there is no much coaching required at the Super Eagles level, but more of coordinating, tactics and management of players. He said: “I can tell you that at the Super Eagles level, there is no much coaching. “It’s mainly coordinating, tactics and management of players unlike in the age-grade teams.” The former U-20 national coach called on fans and football stakeholders to support the Super Eagles technical crew led by Gernot Rohr as they seek to turn around the team. NAN reports that Yobo, 39, had 101 caps for the Super Eagles and featured in three World Cups and six Africa Cup of Nations tournaments before retiring in 2014.Tags: Africa Cup of NationsGernot RohrImama AmapakaboJoseph YoboLadan BossoNigeria Football Coaches AssociationNigeria Football FederationSuper EaglesWorld Cuplast_img read more
