Women’s World Cup 2019: 3 takeaways from USA’s record-setting win over Thailand

first_imgThe U.S. Women’s National Team began its FIFA World Cup title defense with a dominant 13-0 opening victory against Thailand in Group F. The Americans wasted hardly any time getting on the board as Alex Morgan scored in the 12th minute. Kelley O’Hara blew past two defenders in the box and then Morgan headed it to the back of the net, marking her fourth career World Cup goal. But that was only the start for Morgan. She quickly made a statement, finishing with five goals. She sent a firm left-footed strike past a dive from Sukanya Chor Charoenying and it went in from 20-yards out. Lavelle added another goal, while Sam Mewis also added two and Lindsey Horan, Megan Rapinoe, Mallory Pugh and Carli Lloyd each added one for the U.S.YES WE WILL ACCEPT THIS ROSE! 🌹@roselavelle doubles the @USWNT lead with a sweet strike from distance 🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/52BmByOjLw— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) June 11, 2019As the match continued, one thing became evident: The U.S. wanted to make a statement in their tournament opener. This is the first time the U.S. has scored more than one goal in the first half of a Women’s World Cup group game since the 2003 edition, when the Americans played on home soil. The two national teams have only faced off once before, resulting in a 9-0 win for the U.S. in 2016. During Thailand’s last outing in the 2015 tournament, it became the only nation to win a game without progressing to the knockout round, mainly because it gave up too many goals in losses to Germany and Norway. Even then, though, Thailand held reigning champion Germany to just four goals. This time around, Thailand couldn’t do anything to stop the Americans. The match was essentially over just 54 minutes in when the Americans went up 6-0, though it could be argued it was over long before that. To put the victory in perspective: It was the most goals the U.S. has scored in a single World Cup game. The Americans’ largest margin came in 1991 against Chinese Taipei with a 7-0 win. The Americans were six goals above that. While the match turned into a blowout, Thailand still deserves some credit for playing hard the whole time and trying to stop the U.S. They easily could have given up when the Americans were up 10-0, but Thailand still made some big stops and saves in the final minutes. The Americans’ 13 goals set a new record for the most goals in a single World Cup match.Alex Morgan could lead U.S. to titleIt was pretty well known heading into the tournament that Morgan would lead the Americans. Since earning a spot on the U.S. national team in 2010, Morgan has emerged as the face of the USWNT. But her performance against Thailand proved that she will be the one the Americans rely on when it comes to defending their title. To recap: Morgan scored five of the Americans’ 13 goals. She was the first to get the U.S. on the board, scoring in the 12th minute and then again in the 53rd minute. From there, she really laid it on in the second half. Her next three goals came in the 74th, 79th and 87th. Now, Morgan has eight career World Cup goals. Based on Tuesday’s performance, the Americans are likely to blow past their competition in the group stage with matches against Chile and Sweden still to come. France and Germany could present a challenge for the U.S. down the stretch, but based on Morgan’s ability to attack and find the back of the net, it’s not likely they will present much of a challenge.  Tempo, tempo, tempo The American’s really put the pressure on Thailand with their tempo. The USA’s fast pace wore down Thailand’s defense and the Thai national team simply couldn’t keep up. The U.S. held possession for 75% of the match, while Thailand had control only 25% of the time, forcing the Thai national team to defend for much of the game. The American’s pass accuracy was at 82% and Thailand only reached 61%.As the match went on, it became clear that Thailand couldn’t get close to goal and it failed to break past the Americans’ defenders. Thailand only took two shots on goal. For comparison, the U.S. had 39 attempts.last_img read more
