Dodgers’ Farhan Zaidi mulling Giants offer; Dave Roberts’ contract nearing resolution

first_imgAnother significant position is likely to be resolved Wednesday as well. The Dodgers are close to reaching agreement on a multi-year contract extension for Manager Dave Roberts.Technically, Wednesday is the deadline for the Dodgers to exercise the club option for 2019 in Roberts’ original contract with the team. But Friedman said exercising the option was “not an issue” because he was “very confident” the two sides were moving toward an agreement. The deal could be for as many as four years and figures to give Roberts a significant raise from the $1.1 million salary the option would pay him in 2019.“We’ve talked about this for a long time,” Friedman said. “I get the public part of asking the question. I just know the conversations have been pleasant. They’ve been ongoing, tabled at times … while we’re focusing on other things. It’s just not really a story among us, certainly appreciating it is outside.”The coaching staff under Roberts will have at least two significant changes in 2019. Third-base/infield coach Chris Woodward left to become the Texas Rangers’ new manager and now Ward has left a vacancy at hitting coach.Related Articles Cody Bellinger homer gives Dodgers their first walkoff win of season Tuesday saw another departure from the major-league coaching staff with hitting coach Turner Ward accepting the same position on the staff of new Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell. But most significantly, the San Francisco Giants have offered Farhan Zaidi the position as their president of baseball operations in a reconfigured front office. Zaidi is considering his options with the expectation that he will make a decision soon, perhaps on Wednesday. After serving under two of baseball’s leading front-office forces – 10 years under Billy Beane in Oakland and three under Friedman with the Dodgers – the move to San Francisco would afford Zaidi the opportunity to rebuild an organization as the top executive on the baseball side.“Obviously, that’s Farhan’s news and it’s not appropriate to comment on,” Friedman said.It was notable, however, that Zaidi is not in attendance at the GM Meetings and it was Friedman who represented the Dodgers during the media availability session on Tuesday. How Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling topped the baseball podcast empire Dodgers’ Max Muncy trying to work his way out of slow start CARLSBAD — Making it to consecutive World Series was not enough to satisfy most of the Dodgers’ fan base. But it has certainly impressed their competitors. For the second consecutive November, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman’s first days of the offseason have been spent dealing with the departures or possible departures of key members of the team’s on-field staff and front office.“These past, whatever it’s been, nine days, I’ve been more of an HR director than anything else,” Friedman said Tuesday at the GM Meetings. “It’s a compliment to our organization and to the guys who are getting these new opportunities. And I’m happy for them. But it’s also challenging to replace them.“It’s one of the things that happen in our business.”center_img “The vision of what they’re trying to do, I can see it,” Ward said to reporters of leaving the National League champions for a job with the Reds. “I’ve been impressed with their offense. Also, add the logistics of being closer to home. Family is very important to me and it made it hard being in L.A.”Ward lives in Alabama during the offseason and his wife has had health issues in recent years.“I think proximity to home and an opportunity for him that he just couldn’t pass up,” Friedman said. “Our philosophy is to never stand in someone’s way if something makes more sense for them for whatever reason. I think it was a situation that falls under that umbrella. He’s been a big part of what we’ve done the last few years.”Friedman said he and his staff are trying “to wrap our arms around it” and compile lists of candidates to replace Woodward and Ward.A year ago, the Dodgers lost Josh Bard and Tim Hyers from their coaching staff to the Yankees and Red Sox, respectively. Alex Anthopoulos left the front office to become the Braves’ GM. And the top two executives in their player development department left – Gabe Kapler to become the Phillies manager and Jeremy Zoll to run the Twins’ player development.
