NFL MVP stock watch: Russell Wilson one-ups Lamar Jackson; Deshaun Watson awaits his turn

first_imgThe Ravens quarterback a day prior had completed 15 of 17 pass attempts (88.2 percent) for three touchdowns, no interceptions and a perfect 158.3 rating. He added a career-long 47-yard touchdown run. Jackson, who also had a 158.3 rating in Week 1, became the second quarterback to record a passer rating of 158.3 (minimum 10 attempts) in multiple games within a single season in NFL history, joining Ben Roethlisberger (two games in 2007).NFL STANDINGS:Updated playoff picture in AFC, NFCTexans quarterback Deshaun Watson, whose team had a bye in Week 10, will get a chance to showcase his MVP candidacy next week when Houston travels to Baltimore for a head-to-head showdown with Jackson.Below are the top NFL MVP candidates for 2019 and how they are trending, followed by a complete list of NFL MVP odds.NFL MVP stock watchRussell Wilson: UpIn Week 9, Wilson passed for 378 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions for a 133.7 passer rating in an overtime win against the Bucs. That performance led to his being the clear MVP favorite, but he was pitted against a strong 49ers defense in Week 10. All he did was lead his 32nd career game-winning drive in the fourth quarter or overtime, the most in the NFL since he entered the league in 2012.With the win against San Francisco, Wilsom surpassed Roethlisberger (90) for the second-most wins as a starting quarterback over his first eight seasons in the Super Bowl era. Only the Patriots’ Tom Brady (100) had more.Lamar Jackson: UpJackson played out of his mind against the Bengals, who, granted, entered the game with the NFL’s worst rush defense. Yet the Ravens quarterback did much of his damage through the air. Jackson put up a perfect passer rating (158.3) in only three quarters of action (15 of 17, 223 yards, three touchdowns).MVP seasons, though, typically feature their share of memorable highlights, and Jackson submitted his best yet with his ridiculous, 47-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.LAMAR. JACKSON. @Lj_Era8 TO THE HOUSE ‼️‼️😱😱😱😱 pic.twitter.com/DcR8A7S2Vy— Baltimore Ravens (@Ravens) November 10, 2019WATCH: Jackson’s best plays against BengalsDeshaun Watson: IdleWatson entered the Week 10 bye maintaining career highs in passer rating, (107.1) completion percentage (70.2) and passing yards per game (270.2). He also has five rushing touchdowns, already tied for his career high, just nine games into the season.Watson might need a little help from his Houston teammates; the better the Texans look in the standings, the more likely their most valuable player is to be named the league’s most valuable player. The quarterback certainly is doing his part, and he already has at least one memorable highlight working in his favor.Christian McCaffrey: DownQuarterback bias in MVP voting means McCaffrey basically has to set new NFL all-purpose records to be considered. That, and the Panthers have to be a playoff team, which they currently are not.Still, McCaffrey has been electric this season. Entering Week 10, he led the NFL with 1,244 scrimmage yards through eight games this season and joined Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown (1963) as the only players to have at least 150 scrimmage yards and a touchdown in six of their team’s first eight games of a season in NFL history.Aaron Rodgers: UpRodgers’ numbers haven’t been off the charts this season, though his passer rating of 102.7 is the best he’s had in three years. And he’s maintaining a ridiculous touchdown-interception ratio of 17-2. He also already has led two game-winning drives through 10 weeks. The Packers are 8-2 and leading the NFC North as they enter their bye week. If that success continues, Rodgers will at least remain in the MVP conversation.Patrick Mahomes: DownMahomes passed for 446 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions for a 119.2 rating against the Titans in Week 10. Yet the reigning MVP’s stock is down simply because the Chiefs lost and fell to a disappointing 6-4 record, which would put them in the No. 4 seed if the AFC playoffs were to start today. Still, Mahomes has a chance to get back to the top of the MVP list should Kansas City reel off some victories. Even after sitting out a few weeks with a knee injury, Mahomes on Sunday reached 8,007 career passing yards, the most by a quarterback in his first 25 starts in NFL history. With 68 career touchdown passes, he also surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino (65) for the most touchdown passes by a player in his first 25 career starts in NFL history. So, yeah, he’s still in the conversation.MVP honorable mentions:Dak Prescott: The Cowboys’ loss to the Vikings wasn’t his fault. In fact, the quarterback was the only reason Dallas had a chance to beat Minnesota. (Pay that man, Jerry Jones).Dalvin Cook: Speaking of the Vikings’ win over the Cowboys, Dallas couldn’t stop Minnesota’s zone rushing attack, spearheaded by Cook. He is the engine of a strong offense on a playoff team.Minkah Fitzpatrick: The Steelers are 5-4 and still playoff contenders thanks to their defense. The safety is playing out of his mind in Pittsburgh and is justifying the trade that brought him to town.NFL MVP oddsBelow are the latest NFL MVP odds, courtesy of sportsbetting.ag.PlayerOddsRussell Wilson+175Lamar Jackson+250Deshaun Watson+600Aaron Rodgers+900Christian McCaffrey+900Patrick Mahomes+1400Tom Brady+2000Drew Brees+2500Jimmy Garoppolo+2500Dak Prescott+3300Kirk Cousins+3300 Touché, Russell Wilson. The Seahawks quarterback who entered Week 10 leading the NFL in touchdown passes (22) and passer rating (118.2) played in the national spotlight against the 49ers on Monday night, and he needed an epic performance to remain the favorite for NFL MVP considering what Lamar Jackson did against the Bengals on Sunday. Wilson provided just that in Seattle’s 27-24 overtime win.last_img read more
