Airline spokesman Mike Trevino said he could not confirm any details of what happened onboard.Sources told the Washington Post that not long after departing the airport, a passenger lowered his seat into the space of a fellow passenger and a fight followed. A flight attendant and another passenger tried to break up the scuffle, the report said.Is reclining your seat a right?Airport police met the flight at Dulles and determined that charges were not warranted, according to a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. The flight was delayed until Monday, Trevino said. He did not know if the feuding passengers were onboard when it departed after the delay. The disagreement over seat reclining is not the first to get physical. In November, a disgruntled passenger grabbed a reclining flier’s right ear with enough force to knock his glasses off, according to a complaint filed in that case.By Marnie Hunter, CNN Share Sharelast_img read more

Hammers agree Upton Park sale

first_imgWest Ham have agreed a deal to sell their Upton Park ground to a developer once the club have completed their move to the Olympic Stadium in 2016. The Galliard Group has been named as the successful bidder for the site, with West Ham saying they had chosen a developer with close links to the community and a plan to honour the history of the club as part of its development on the site. Hammers vice-chairman Karren Brady said: “We opted to reach an agreement with Galliard because they are a local London developer and employer with origins in east London. “We know they are committed to working closely with the local community and Newham Council on proposals to transform the site into a residential and retail village, which will benefit the local community and east London’s regional economy. “The deal demonstrates that we have been true to our word by securing the regeneration of two areas of east London through our move to the Olympic Stadium in 2016. “In addition, and most importantly for us, we can see that Galliard are passionate about working with West Ham United to engage their supporters to help deliver a fitting legacy that will honour the tradition of the famous ground. “We are confident that West Ham United fans will be excited about their vision and the way they plan to respect more than 100 years of West Ham history at Upton Park.” The Galliard Group plans to build new homes on the site as well as retail and leisure facilities with underground parking which would be completed by 2018. The group has also been in talks with the family of former West Ham and England captain Bobby Moore about the possibility of placing a landscaped garden named in his honour at the centre of the site. There are also plans for a statue of Moore and further artwork to commemorate the history of West Ham. Moore’s daughter Roberta Moore said: “I have always believed that there should be some form of permanent West Ham United presence at the Boleyn Ground site after the team leave and I’m really pleased that the centre point of the development is planned to be named in honour of my father. “Hopefully the new sculptures and buildings being proposed will also help ensure that a lasting legacy to the Club, my father and his team-mates is left at Upton Park.” center_img Press Associationlast_img read more

Alex Song: Barcelona a lifetime opportunity

first_imgNew Barcelona signing Alex Song says he had no hesitation in leaving Arsenal and he expects to now win trophies in Catalonia.Song, 24, was speaking at the Camp Nou after completing his €19 million move from Premier League side Arsenal.“I am very happy to be at Barcelona, to be a Barca player,” Song said at a press conference. “It is a big day for me and my family. I said yes to Barca because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.“I will try to do my best. We will aim to win trophies because this a team of champions.”Reports in the UK had suggested that the move had damaged Song’s relationship with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, but the player said there were no hard feelings on either side.“I want to thank Arsenal and Arsene Wenger for letting me come here,” Song said. “I wanted to make the move and I am happy to have taken this decision. I have no problems with Wenger.” Song reportedly slept Sunday night at the house of another former Wenger protege, Barca midfielder Cesc Fabregas, before being presented to the Camp Nou fans ahead of Monday evening’s Gamper Trophy game against Sampdoria, which the Serie A side won 1-0.“(Fabregas) has told me many things about Barca, but he did not need to convince me,” Song said. “I know all about them, I have seen them on the television. When you move to a new place you have to adapt and Cesc will help me. The style of play is similar to Arsenal.“The Camp Nou is a magical stadium, I have had an opportunity to see its fantastic atmosphere.”Song, who has signed a five-year contract and will wear shirt number 25, is now available for Thursday evening’s Spanish Supercopa home first leg against Real Madrid.“It is a game with lots of rivalry, very important for Barca,” he said. “I am especially excited to be able to play in it. I would like to play against Madrid, if the coach thinks it is right. I respect Madrid, but I think Barcelona play better football.” It will not be easy to gain a place in Barca’s starting line-up, said Song, who had praise for the team’s current ‘pivote’ Sergio Busquets and added he was happy to play in different positions as required by coach Tito Vilanova.“I did not come here to take Busquets’ place,” he said. “He is the best defensive midfielder in the world. At Arsenal I have played centre-half and in midfield. I am ready to play wherever the coach needs me.”Song said his two young sons were also very excited about their father’s move.“Both are big fans of (Lionel) Messi,” he said. “When they play in the garden they pretend to be him. Messi is the best player in the world, he has an impressive talent and it is a pleasure to be able to play with him. I am very happy.”Barca sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta said that Song had been Barca’s first choice to fill the gap in midfield left by Seydou Keita’s departure and it was unlikely there would be any further new arrivals at the club this summer. “He was top of our list of potential signings,” Zubizarreta said. “He is good on the ball, good tactically and physically strong. The deal with Arsenal has gone through quickly. We now have the squad we wanted.”last_img read more

Rich, Poor Alike May Now Run for Office

first_imgThe House of Representatives has taken a decision to drop registration fees for electoral offices in Liberia, thereby opening the entire contest to either the ‘rich or poor’.Said decision means that ordinary Liberians wanting to serve their country in public offices can do so without fear of spending huge sum of money for candidate’s registration in an electoral process.Plenary took the decision Tuesday, May 20, to reduce the registration fees for elected positions after the Senate attempted to amend the Electoral Law of 2006 and at the same time increased the fees for both legislative and presidential elections.Despite Representative Acarous Gray’s motion for Reconciliation filed, the House voted 26 for, four against with three abstentions in order to set the figures at US$2,500 for presidency, US$2,000 for the vice president while the Senate and House carried US$750 and US$500 respectively. In the wisdom of the House’s Committee on Elections and Inaugurations headed by Grand Bassa County Representative Gabriel B. Smith, increasing the registration fees for any given electoral process disenfranchises popular aspirants, who have merger resources to participate in the elections.Lofa County Representative Moses Kollie motion in favor of the reduction was greeted with cheers from many of his colleagues, who felt the Senate’s changes were intended to target their opponents in the ensuing Special Senatorial Election slated for October this year. The Senate’s amendment could not get the Lower House’s concurrence because of the 600 to 700 percent increase. “The committee believed that the intent of the Senate might have been good in so far as they seek to raise fund for our electoral programs, but the committee finds the proposed figures somewhat astronomical and unbearable; given the reality of our economic situation. Moreover, if this provision were to be maintained, it would place Liberia above all democratic countries in Africa in terms of candidates’ nomination fees on the continent,” Smith said.      Meanwhile, the Government of Liberia is yet to secure the US$10.3 million needed to fund the Special Senatorial Election. The Electoral body recently announced adjustment to the electoral process due to what sources closed to the Commission believed, “is the lack of resources to conduct the election in time.”The Commission failed to conduct what is considered, cardinal and critical component of the electoral period, the Issuance of the Writ of Election.Said process gives electoral magistrates across the 15 counties the authority to move into their respective area and conduct the election. However, up to press time, the process which should have been conducted on Friday, May 9 remains uncertain.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
