IN TROUBLE—Alan Herrera of Sinaloa, Mexico falls back into the corner ropes as Rankin’s Monty Meza-Clay hits him with a strong left Friday Night Aug. 8 at the Consol Energy Center. (Photo by J.L. Martello)A new generation of talent was on display at the Iron Mike Promotions’ The Pride of Pittsburgh boxing event at Consol Energy Center, Aug. 8t. But it was a familiar face that stole the show.Lightweight Monty Meza-Clay (36-3-0), of Rankin, knocked out Alan Herrera of Sinaloa, Mexico, in the 10th and final round.“I’m not the main event but I’m the main event,” said Meza-Clay. “I live a fighters lifestyle. I’m all business. I might be the smallest but I fight like I’m the biggest.”In the main event Monessen native Sammy Vasquez Jr., (16-0-0) defeated previously unbeaten James Stevenson (21-1-0) of Baltimore. Vasquez stopped him in the ninth round.“I never been past round six and I was hoping that he took me into deep water and he did,” said Vasquez. “I come a long way from a tiny gym at Courttime to the Consol Energy Center and it’s because of all my great fans. They want to see me fight so we keep moving into bigger and bigger arenas.”Monty Meza-Clay relinquished his title out of health concerns and after a controversial loss. Tommy Yankello, the man who trains Meza-Clay, once called his fighter “Pittsburgh’s fourth franchise,” after the Steelers, Pirates and Penquins.

Thousands of Donegal fans may not now get to see Garth Brooks.THE promoters behind Garth Brooks’ Croke Park concerts says all five could now be cancelled – after two were pulled by Dublin City Council earlier today.Peter Aiken of Aiken Promotions told RTE that he was very disappointed the council turned down licenses for concerts on July 28 and 29.The council did give the go-ahead for three other gigs on July 25, 26 and 27. Mr Aiken told RTÉ News that the singer was “devastated” by the decision. The singer, said Mr Aiken, was upset that 160,000 fans would not now be able to see his shows on the cancelled dates. Many Donegal fans of the star queued for days to get tickets. He said that the Croke Park performances had grown from an initial two shows to a much bigger customised production, which would be a “once-off event” that would not be replicated anywhere else in the world. The production costs were scaled on this basis and it was not possible to simply stop two of the shows, he said.He said Aiken Promotions had been in daily contact with the council since the earliest stages of planning the concerts and it had never been indicated at any point that there was going to be a problem staging five shows.Already there have been numerous offers of alternative venues but the Aviva has already been ruled out. It’s thought all five shows will be either cancelled – or moved en bloc to a new venue. But accommodating 80,000 people at each gig will be impossible, with Slane already also ruled out. Marseille teammates liken Dario Benedetto to Sergio Agueroby Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveValere Germain has likened Olympique Marseille teammate Dario Benedetto to Sergio Aguero.Benedetto has quickly won over his new OM teammates since arriving from Boca Juniors.”Dario Benedetto? The last time I heard (Sergio) Aguero. It’s not necessarily the same profile, but they are players who are not very tall, who fight, keep the ball very well and finish the opportunities they have,” said Germain. “So maybe he looks a little like Aguero. We hope in any case that he will do as good a season that what Aguero will do with (Manchester) City.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say
Police investigate three Brighton fans after racist incidentsby Ian Ferris17 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveThree Brighton fans are under investigation by Sussex Police following two separate incidents of racism at the club’s Amex Stadium, reports BBC Sport. The first incident involved two fans and took place at an Under-23 fixture against Tottenham on 27 September. The second occurred during Saturday’s win over Spurs, with one person arrested by police at the stadium.Brighton chief executive Paul Barber condemned the behaviour and thanked fans who reported the incidents.”It is very encouraging that in both incidents our stewards were alerted to this totally unacceptable behaviour by other Albion fans and, working with Sussex Police, our staff were able to take swift action, which hopefully will increase the chances of a conviction,” Barber said. Twitter/@Fine_and_Tandy Twitter/@Fine_and_TandyLouisville men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino has had a rough season in the PR department, between the alleged sex scandal rocking his program and the way he acted following his team’s loss to Kentucky on Saturday. One writer believes that the recent developments have vaulted him into a league of his own – one you don’t want to be in.FOX Sports’ Aaron Torres believes that Pitino is now the “least likable figure in college sports.” Here’s his thought process:…He’s a man who has proven to have virtually no moral compass off the court, and on the court, has a program that is currently in the midst of the NCAA’s crosshairs. And yet despite all that, despite the fact that he continues to make an embarrassment of both his school and himself, he found time to put himself in the headlines for all the wrong reasons again this weekend. That man is Rick Pitino, and while fans continue to dislike Coach K, Calipari and Saban for reasons only known to them, I am here to say that Pitino is, without a doubt, the most impossible person to like in all of college sports. And since no one else is going to call him out for making a fool of himself Saturday I will do so here. Obviously, coaches stick around much longer than players in college athletics, so they’re going to make up the majority of any kind of list like this. Pitino certainly has his fair share of questionable incidents over the years to justify a spot on here. But is he the least likable of all? You can read Aaron’s entire column here.
