A simple but effective stepped rear extension for our sociable, book-loving clients. Budget informed structure and materials to create a light filled and unique design that has a transformative effect on everyday family life. This rear addition to an Edwardian terrace house in South London was driven by the principles of simplicity and honesty –  influenced by a modest budget but also a shared vision to create something unpretentious but materially and spatially rich.Save this picture!© Megan TaylorSave this picture!Existing and proposed section AASave this picture!© Megan TaylorThe rear extension is stepped in plan at the rear to respond to existing extensions on either side and reduce impact on neighbours. It creates a new family space by combining the existing rear living room and kitchen with the new additional space to provide kitchen, dining and living areas, each subtly defined within the larger space.Save this picture!© Megan TaylorA timber structure of exposed structural plywood was used for the extension to reduce steelwork costs and provide something that could act as both structure and exposed internal storage. This lightweight timber grid was then draped in a skin of red brick to provide external cladding and robustness where required. The bricks are constructed using a stack bond with a light, recessed mortar accentuating the geometry of the materials and referencing the structural timber grid internally.Save this picture!Existing and proposed ground floor planThe objective for the whole project was to allow & encourage each element of the house to be what it wanted to be – thus doors and windows are a simple dark grey aluminium frame, the fascias above are patinated lead over external plywood and the floor and worktops are a cast concrete. Kitchen fronts and storage are formed in structural ply to match the exposed new structure. The result is a light-filled family living space that is both of-its-time but comfortable sitting alongside the main house. “We love it so much – it’s like [nimtim] took what was in our brains and interpreted it perfectly – with some added extras we wouldn’t have thought of!”Save this picture!© Megan TaylorProject gallerySee allShow lessPhotographer Manipulates Architecture to Create an Imaginary WorldArticlesLaughing Matters: The State of a Nation Exhibition / Aberrant ArchitectureSelected Projects Share Hive House / nimtim architects 2019 Photographs Architects: nimtim architects Area Area of this architecture project CopyAbout this officenimtim architectsOfficeFollow#TagsProjectsBuilt ProjectsSelected ProjectsResidential ArchitectureHousesRefurbishmentExtensionUnited KingdomPublished on June 23, 2019Cite: “Hive House / nimtim architects” 23 Jun 2019. EU seeks reinstated curbs due to virus ‘resurgence’

first_imgTopics : The EU’s health agency Monday urged countries seeing an increase in cases of COVID-19 to reinstate some curbs, warning of a resurgence of cases in parts of Europe. In its latest risk assessment, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said there was evidence that the novel coronavirus was picking up speed.”While many countries are now testing mild and asymptomatic cases, which has resulted in increased case reports, there is a true resurgence in cases in several countries as a result of physical distancing measures being relaxed,” the agency said. The Stockholm-based agency said for those countries seeing an increase “the risk of further escalation of COVID-19 is high.”If those countries fail to implement or reinforce restrictions, the risk was “very high,” it warned.According to the ECDC, countries that had seen the increase after control measures were lifted, “should consider re-instating selected measures through a phased, step-wise and sustainable approach.”The ECDC also said the total number of daily cases, as well as the 14-day incidence rate seemed to be increasing, “although it is currently lower than the first peak which occurred on April 9, 2020.”In the two weeks leading up to August 2, most of the over 100,000 new cases were reported in Spain, Romania, France, the UK and Germany, it said.According to a tally by AFP, over 3 .3 million cases of COVID-19 have so far been recorded in Europe as well as 213,353 deaths.last_img read more
