The shocking Liverpool stat that outweighs the loss of Suarez

first_imgLiverpool continued their stuttering start to the season last weekend with a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea. While Kopites will rightly bemoan the questionable refereeing decisions at times, there can be no real questioning the outcome, with the Merseysiders looking toothless in attack and suspect in defence.Once again Mario Balotelli was on the receiving end of negative comments regarding his contribution, with the Liverpool striker failing to register a shot, let alone score against Chelsea, a worrying statistic that appears to be another nail in the coffin of his Anfield career. So far this season Liverpool’s attack has failed to really get going with the Redmen having only found the net 14 times in the league and while Balotelli may be one of the key characters of this failing, he cannot and should not take full responsibility. At this exact same stage last season Liverpool had scored 21 goals in the league, but following the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona and the subsequent injury nightmare for Daniel Sturridge, few could really expect them to reach that lofty total especially with their remaining options.Perhaps the most unedifying figure to emerge from the fixture instead surrounds Liverpool’s defence.Manager Brendan Rodgers insisted he would make it his mission to improve his side’s back line by bringing in top class talent, before proceeding to spend around £35m on the arrivals of Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno, as well as welcoming Javier Manquillo on loan. The result has been an imbalance and failure to gel that has worsened an already shaky defence. At this stage last season Liverpool had conceded 10 league goals, eventually ending the campaign having seen 50 scored against them.Fast forward a matter of months and that figure has worsened, with the Redmen having already conceded 15 in the league and 24 in all competitions – a pretty depressing figure considering the level of strengthening and money spent. The avalanche of goals regularly seen in Liverpool games last season made their conceding not as prevalent, despite Rodgers’ men suffering well over a goal a game (1.3) at the time.Without that free-scoring this time around, their defensive fallibility is much more noticeable. Attack-wise Liverpool were not as poor as they have been at other periods of the campaign, but once again it was defending that was Liverpool’s real undoing. With the return to fitness of Sturridge the goals should start to flow again, but until Liverpool can find a solution at the back they will continue to struggle.Liverpool fans, do you agree?
